STYRIAN PUMPKIN SEEDS

Origin and nomination:
This special, hull-less, dark-green seed has been especially cultivated in the Austrian region Styria. The „Styrian Pumpkin Seed“ is therefore a mutation since the outer shell is not lignified. This special seed has been cultivated by Styrian farmers for more than 100 years.

Processing of pumpkin seeds:
After the harvest the pumpkin seeds are extracted automatically or, in smaller companies by hand out of the pumpkin flesh. Then the seeds get washed with pure drinking water and gently dried at approx. 50 °C. The perfect temperature for storing is 12°C at a humidity of 60 %. When dried the pumpkin seeds get cleaned by brush, aspirator, gravity separator, de-stoner, magnet and metallic detector. The sieves and the colour sorter divide the seeds into 3 quality classes: snack seeds, seeds for baking and seeds to be processed to oil.

Nutritive importance:
Pumpkin seeds contain valuable ingredients: they contain various mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids (more than 80%), the vitamins B1, B2, B6 and various minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphor, selenium and zinc. The most important ingredients of pumpkin seeds however are phytosterols, a group of bio-active ingredients which help to prevent or ease bladder troubles and prostate. This positive effect has been verified by studies.
